Gary Bigot

- Lecturer in the ARC: Invisual Art (archived ARC)
Gary Bigot develops an artistic approach based on the view that everything is made, produced and installed without any intervention on his part. He is one of the first invisual artists.
Since 1985, his principle of hygrometry has been regarded as his work. Its specific functioning refers each of us back to ourselves, as sensitive, productive, knowing and communicative beings. He considers it to be his self-portrait, or indeed the “portrait of everyone”. This liberating act-position allowed him to consider, radically, that all his works are produced and installed, and produce and install themselves, without his intervention. Producing anything more was, for him, superfluous and artistically unworthy. The opening created by this extreme and definitive attitude proves unsuspected, and prompts reflection and creation. What happens afterwards no longer concerns him. He positions himself as an involved observer of his work, finished but not closed. He sets his concept free, along with his attitude, and, should an outside need arise, he authorises anyone to make use of it, to produce works, exhibitions, discourses, etc., and even to market it for their own profit. And all this without his consent!
The artist has given lectures at, among other places, the École nationale d’art de Paris (ENDA), the Université de Belval (Luxembourg) and La Maison Commune (Brussels).
Gary Bigot initiated the Biennale de Paris in Luxembourg, which ran from 1 October 2018 to 30 September 2020. Entitled “L’air que je souffle, tu respireras un jour”, it took the form of an application through which users could geolocate their breath on the world map by blowing on a computer or smartphone.

Gary Bigot develops an artistic approach based on the view that everything is made, produced and installed without any intervention on his part. In his practice, he adopts the following radical resolutions: no production by himself, no promotion by himself, no profit for himself, no personal ownership.
