Portrait of Ricardo Mbarkho

Research Committee (alphabetical order)

PhD. Artist, Director of Research and Director of the Centre for Research and Creation at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts (ALBA, University of Balamand).

In his work, he explores and theorises the aesthetic, economic, political and social conditions and measures of an art that frees itself from the idea of the work, the audience and the context; an art without a material or immaterial object, indeed post-immaterial. In an ideal type, this is a research-creation of an art without art.

Ricardo Mbarkho holds a doctorate from Université Sorbonne Paris Nord; his thesis deals with the shift from cultural industries to creative industries, with a particular focus on the in-depth study of media arts. He is also a graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture of the Lebanese University in Beirut, of the École Supérieure d’Études Cinématographiques in Paris (ESEC), and of the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris (ENSBA), after studying new media art at the School of Fine Arts of Carnegie Mellon University in the United States.

The artist has given lectures and led ateliers at venues such as Aix Marseille Université, ANdEA (Strasbourg), ARS Electronica (Linz), ARTos Foundation (Nicosia and Madrid), Ashok Jain Gallery (New York), Biennale de Paris, Ecole nationale d’art de Paris, Ecole nationale supérieure des beaux-art de Paris, EMAF (Osnabrück), IMéRA (Marseille), Institut Supérieur des Beaux-arts de Sousse, Jeu de Paume (Paris), MUCEM (Marseille), Notre Dame University (Louaize), Transmediale (Berlin), UNESCO (Paris), Alexandria University, the Lebanese University, Université Saint-Joseph (Beirut), and the World Summit Contributory Conference on ICT & Creativity (Vienna).
